The Land

Village Commons is located in the heart of Calgary’s East Village neighbourhood – about 500m west from where the Elbow River meets the Bow River. This is a place of confluence where the sharing of ideas and opportunities naturally come together.

Indigenous peoples have used their own names for this area long before Treaty 7 was signed, and broken, and settlers named this place Calgary.  The Métis call this area Otos-kwunee. The Stoney Nakoda Nation as Wîchîspa Oyade and the people of the Tsuut’ina nation call this area Guts-ists-i.

The word Mohkinstsis is the Blackfoot name for this area. The word translates to “elbow,” in reference to the Elbow River and where it meets the Bow. We are sincerely grateful to be guests on this land, practicing humility, grace, truth and reconciliation.
