Older Adult Counselling

When adults reach 65+, they face many changes that can cause anxiety and depression – loss of meaningful roles in their family and community, declining health and mobility, isolation and loneliness, strained family relationships, and worry about who will take care of them as they age. Long-standing issues such as hoarding and depression, can also intensify with age.

carya offers help and hope in managing these changes.

Through counselling, people learn:

  • Different ways of solving problems
  • Better communication with partners, children, and parents
  • Methods to cope with stress, depression, and anxiety
  • How to understand and manage a wide range of feelings
  • To strengthen community connections and support

Participants can choose to visit one of the accessible community offices for individual, family, or group sessions, or attend any of the groups, seminars, and workshops that we offer. Services are offered by both male and female counsellors in English, Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu.

Eligibility and intake

carya is committed to providing easy access to our counselling services and have counsellors located in numerous locations throughout the city. The intake coordinator will discuss the various locations with you and work with you to choose the best location.

To initiate the counselling process, call the intake coordinator at 403-205-5244.

If you are in crisis and need immediate assistance, please call the Distress Center at 403-266-4357 or 9-1-1.

Thanks in part to a subsidy from The City of Calgary’s Family and Community Support Services, fees for our counselling are available on a sliding scale.

Fees will be established during the initial telephone call with the intake coordinator, at which time you will be asked your annual income. However, fee changes can be discussed if the established fee is not manageable or if family circumstances change.

Fees are payable each session by cash, cheque, Visa or MasterCard. If you meet with your counsellor at our downtown office, you will also be able to pay with Debit.
