Father’s Day is just around the corner, a day when we celebrate the important role that male-identifying role models play in our lives. Whether they’re teaching us basic life skills, imparting important values, or just spending quality time with us, these fathers and father-figures often have a big impact on who we are as children and the people we develop in to as adults.
When we build fathers up, the whole family benefits. Children of fathers who are highly involved in their lives display higher levels of self-confidence and self-control, are less likely to engage in risky behaviours as teens, and may be less prone to depression (source). When fathers have a positive relationship with their children, kids display increased problem-solving ability, better school achievement, and more empathy, as well as decreased violence and aggression (source). The effects of this positive role-modeling, or lack of it, is often felt for multiple generations.
Whether it’s through our Odyssey program for grade six boys, our Supermen of Bowness program for male caregivers and their children, our conversation group for older adult men, or one of our other 40 programs, at carya we work every day to help men and boys realize their potential.
