September Spotlight: Brian Armstrong

Every year, the Calgary Flames Foundation contributes to the Calgary community, creating positive change and touching the lives of thousands. This year, carya has been one of the lucky recipients of funding from the Foundation, and their support has helped us make an impact in a number of important ways. We are honoured to have the opportunity to feature Brian Armstrong this month –  someone who has given back to carya in a big way!

Brian Armstrong is the Executive Chef for Calgary Sports & Entertainment Corporation, responsible for all things food that go on at the Scotiabank Saddledome and McMahon Stadium. With experience in a variety of culinary settings across Canada and the US, and a deep desire to grow and learn, Brian has been a proud member of the Calgary Flames organization for three years.

Brian has graciously leant his culinary talents and expertise to carya over the last few months, preparing a three course meal for a virtual lunch gathering for 75 seniors and leading a cooking class for youth in our Starburst program. “You need to support the community you live and work in,” Brian explains when asked why he choses to support carya. “Food is a part of all of our lives, and I want to share what I have learned to help ensure that everyone has access to nutritious food and has the ability and comfort level to prepare their own meals.”

As Village Commons, our new community space in East Village, approaching its opening date, Brian is helping us figure out how we can make the most of our brand new kitchen. Whether it be for cooking classes, meal planning seminars, events, or food distribution, we want this kitchen to be a space that will serve everyone in East Village and beyond, and Brian is helping us achieve that vision.

Speaking about his connection to Village Commons, Brian says: “I love the idea of community space that focuses on culinary education for all age groups and the ability to help people in need through providing healthy nutritious meals.”

Thanks to Brian, the Calgary Flames, and the Calgary Flames Foundation for your continued support of carya!
