At Carya, we believe strong relationships are the foundation of strong families, and strong families are the foundation of strong communities.
But we also understand that strength doesn’t mean perfection. Families come in all shapes and sizes, and every family experiences ups and downs. Strength means connection. It means showing up for one another, navigating life’s challenges together, and having the tools to grow, adapt, and heal.
That’s where Carya comes in.
Every day, we see how stressors like financial strain, isolation, trauma, or caregiving responsibilities can affect family dynamics. But we also see how, with the right support, families become more resilient, more connected, and more confident in their ability to thrive.
What We’re Doing
Carya strengthens parents and families by providing evidence-based interventions that support positive parenting practices, improve family functioning and cohesion, and prevent and stop elder abuse. From family-focused counselling and early childhood parenting supports to registered and drop-in programs like Parenting Anxious Kids, our programs are designed to build resilience, confidence, and connection.

As a first-time mom experiencing postpartum depression, one parent came to Carya searching for a way to break the cycle of isolation. “I wanted to get out of the house, it was isolating being alone with baby every day,” she shared.
When she attended her first parenting group, she was met with warmth and understanding. “I feel more hopeful and connected since attending. I’ve gained confidence in being a mom who’s able to bring my baby out to do fun activities.”
These programs offered more than just a reason to leave the house. They became a catalyst for healing, joy, and connection. Singing with her baby helped her feel calmer and more present.
“My mood would be so much better after attending a class that it encouraged me to go out more and do other things with my baby.”

Through the support and encouragement she found in one of Carya’s parenting programs, she began building friendships, regaining her confidence, and strengthening the bond with her child. “The team at Carya helped me in my motherhood journey. I was suffering from severe postpartum depression and felt so isolated. When I finally showed up to a class, I was met with the most supportive and welcoming people. It’s been a place I always look forward to.”
Her message to others: “Carya is welcoming and safe, all you have to do is show up. If you’re seeking help, try not to overthink your hesitations. Just show up. They will help you, even in ways you least expect.”
Our Broader Impact
This parent’s journey is just one example of how Carya’s family-focused supports can transform lives. In 2024 alone, Carya worked alongside 1,534 unique families, helping them navigate complex challenges and discover their strengths.
These supports don’t just meet immediate needs. They help families build strength, confidence, and resilience for generations.
Why Strong Families Matter
In Calgary, the demand for accessible, affordable family support has grown in the wake of the pandemic and ongoing economic pressures. The interrelated effects of the pandemic on job loss, financial strain, social isolation, school disruption, and relationship stress are expected to have an enduring negative impact on families, particularly those experiencing vulnerable circumstances.
In stressful home environments, individuals often struggle with compromised physical and mental health, educational setbacks, and social disconnection. Left unaddressed, these difficulties can create cycles of hardship that stretch across generations.
That’s why our work matters.
By connecting caregivers and families with evidence-based therapies and counselling programs, along with community-based opportunities for self-development, Carya builds confidence and improves cohesion and functionality, which strengthens the entire family.
Because when families are strong, communities are strong.
And every family deserves the opportunity to thrive.
